The Story
Ward, Lincoln and Paul began roasting as a hobby in the early 90's,
roasting on a ten-pound shop roaster at night while working their
regular jobs during the day.
As word got out and their reputation grew, they were able to quit
their days jobs. They roasted in a 5th floor warehouse space and
a basement location before finally moving to a 14,000 sq ft. location
in Milwaukee's East Side in 1997.
In 2001, they opened the Alterra Baking Company as a way to provide
freshly baked sweets and pastries to their nine retail locations.

They like strong coffee with big flavor at Alterra, so they work
hard sourcing beans, roasting, testing, tasting, and adjusting to
make sure the final product meets their standards. Trips to origin
help them to develop direct relationships with growers.
Alterra supports Fair Trade and organic coffees. They currently
carry 8 Fair Trade coffees and rank among the top 12 roasters in
the country based on total volume of Fair Trade Certified coffees
purchased.
