The Story
Kaldi's began in 1994 when Suzanne couldn't find a good cup of
coffee. She took matters into her own hand by quiting her job as
a journalist and opening a coffeehouse in the historical DeMun neighborhood
of Clayton in St. Louis.
The goal was to offer their customers the best coffee and espresso
possible. They sampled coffees from local roasters, but found their
"gourmet" coffee was just a variation on the canned and
preground stuff they supplied to the masses. So, they bought our
own roaster and started roasting their own. Soon they were producing
the great coffee, and lots of local cafes, restaurants and grocery
stores agreed.
They still hand-roast and blend all our coffees in small batches.
When you open a bag of Kaldi's coffee, you'll immediately notice
the subtle color differences in each blend - that's custom roasting
at work. They don't use computers, spectrometers or fancy charts
to make their roasts - just our natural sense and experience.
Kaldi's is now owned by the Zimmer family along with Howard Lerner
and Suzanne Langlois.
