The Story
As many local businesses and a few adventuresome walk-in customers
know, the best coffee in Austin for the last 15 years has been Roasted
by Joe. Joe is Master Roaster Joe Lozano, and he has been
selling his beans both locally in Austin and across the country,
earning a reputation for outstanding coffee. Joe also has a reputation
for his quick sarcastic wit and piquant charm, keeping customers
coming back for more of both the excellent coffee and the conversation.
In January, 2008, Joe teamed up with Linda Ryan to purchase Third
Coast Coffee Roasting Co."
"They quickly updated the Third Coast facility and introduced
Fair Trade, organically grown, and Transitional (in the process
of Organic Certification) coffees to the menu, as well as Joes
sought-after medium roasts.
Third Coast tries hard to go beyond Fair Trade and Organic coffees
by working directly with producer cooperatives. That means they
dont purchase our coffee beans blindly through an importer
based on fair trade certifications. Instead, they source their specialty
grade Fair Trade and organic coffees through direct relationships
with farmers and cooperatives worldwide.
Locations
Online and through local restaurants and cafes

Passions
Joe was one of the founding members of Cooperative Coffees, the
first roaster's cooperative created to buy direct, Fair Trade coffee
from farmer coops. He has been on the green bean committee for the
past ten years as well as contributing in other capacities such
as improving processing issues and working with other roasters both
here in the states and at origin.
Joe has both instigated and been involved with projects in Guatemala,
Mexico, and Nicaragua, and plans to travel back to Mexico this year
on a CRS sponsored trip to teach farmers improved roasting skills
at origin.
Linda has also served as head of the Outreach committee for Cooperative
Coffees several years ago, and has traveled as well.
Awards
Third Coast just received our Organic Certification through the
Texas Department of Agriculture, which is very hard for a roaster
to do.
Quote
"As far as awards, we have never focused on submitting our
coffees for any reviews. Our time has been focused on our coffees
and our long-term relationships with our producers and customers.
We have customers that have come in every morning without fail for
the past fifteen years to have coffee with us, and we aren't even
a coffee shop!" - Linda Ryan
